Ghatasthapana is one of the significant rituals during Navratri. It marks the beginning of nine days festivity. Place the idol or any image of Durga Mata at puja place.
Place the kalash filled with clean or holy water in front of deity. You can use copper or silver or earthen pot.
Drop Supari, scent, Durva grass, Akshat and coins into the kalash water.
Cover its top with mango or Ashoka leaves. Now take a coconut wrap this coconut inside the red cloth. Fasten the coconut and red cloth with the sacred thread (mauli) and place it on the kalash.
Tie mauli (scared thread) around the neck of the kalash.
Now invoke Goddess Durga and request her to accept your prayers and to oblige you by residing into the Kalash for nine days.

Collect some garden soil and make a small bed of mud for sowing grains. You can use any convenient utensil for this. Place some wheat or barley seeds.
This is placed in the Puja room and cared for during the Navratri period. At the end of Navratri the shoots reach a height of 3-5 inches. These are pulled out and given to devotees as form of blessings.
