Krishna Janmashtami fast is same as Ekadashi and all the rules of Ekadashi fast should also be followed on Krishna janmashtami fast. One is not suppose to consume grains during Janamashtmi fasting until the fast is broken on next day after sunrise.

Janmashtami puja begins early in the morning when the devotees give a bath or abhishek to Bal Gopal's idol with gangajal, ghee, ganga jal, honey and curd.
Lord Krishna is then adorned with new clothes generally in red, yellow and orange colors. These clothes are decked with stone or other precious jewelry. Jewelry is also put on him.
Then, lord Krishna is offered different food items or 'bhog'. It can vary from milk and milk products, fruit, kheer, pedha.
After this the special Krishna puja is performed. Diyas are lighted and the house is illuminated. Devotees sing, bhajan, aarti and bells are rung. Some devotees read out the 108 names of the Lord.
The cradle of the Bal Gopal (child God) is rocked and conches are blown.

During Krishna Janamashtmi fasting, Parana is done on the next day after sunrise when Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra are over. If sometime the next day, Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra don't get over before Sunset then fast can be broken during day time when either Ashtami Tithi or Rohini Nakshatra is over.
most of the time, Krishna Janamashtmi is listed in two consecutive days where the first one is for Smarta Sampradaya and the other one is for Vaishanava Sampradaya.
